California lawmakers unanimously approve online sweepstakes ban, bill heads to Governor Newsom

California’s legislature has passed a unanimous ban on online sweepstakes gaming, sending Assembly Bill 831 to Governor Gavin Newsom, who has until October 12 to act. The bill cleared the Assembly 63-0 and passed the Senate without opposition. While some lawmakers criticized the lack of consumer input, the measure received backing from groups like the Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation, CNIGA, the Sports Betting Alliance, and the California Chamber of Commerce. Opposition came from the Social Gaming Leadership Alliance, VGW, SPGA, and smaller tribes such as the Kletsel Dehe Wintun Nation.
